In order for a turtle to live, function and grow properly, they need to obtain calcium. This is done: 1) through their diet 2) through basking in the sun. Basking in the sun gives the turtle Vitamin D3, which their body converts into calcium.

Yes. Turtles are reptiles, and therefore cold-blooded. They need the sun's heat to keep them warm and to speed up their metabolism. Aquatic turtles also need to dry out their shells a few times a day, or the shell grows mold and fungus and becomes infected.

Just joking..

The reason why turtles like the sun so much is because they have secret photovoltaic cells installed on their shell, that provides them with electric power and recharges their batteries. That's why turtles can sprint at their food at an such an amazing speed (nearly as fast as a pro tennis player's service).

Reptiles are cold-blooded (endothermic). Put simply, this means they have no means to regulate their body temperature like mammals (and humans) can.

The only way for them to warm up their bodies is to bask on a large rock, or open area, in direct sunlight - thus absorbing the warmth of the suns rays.

Once sufficiently warmed, they are free to go off in search of food etc.

Yes, turtles can be in the sun. I think they get vitamin d from the sun, so it would be good for it as long as the turtle keeps hydrated and isn't in the sun for too long. I'm not really an expert, but I have had a couple of pet turtles. My turtle has a lamp that can probably be bought at most pet stores, so that would be an alternative. If it goes outside, make sure it doesn't get away. When I was little, my turtle was pretty boring to watch after a while, so my sister and I went to play in our backyard and lost our turtle. you might want to put something colorful like a pipe cleaner on the turtle to spot it easily. I hope this helps you and your turtle! :)

My guess would be that they are trying to dry their legs off as much as possible.
