There's no specific reason. It's probably easier for the schools to close during the summer - as most families want to take their children on holiday during the warmer weather. The school has a choice - either stay open, and teach the small handful of kids that didn't go away, or close for the summer, and resume lessons when the holiday season is over.
Australian schools do have along summer break. The summer break is a minimum of six weeks long and, in many private schools, up to eight weeks long.
The actual Christmas holiday break is two days - Christmas Day And Boxing Day (26 December). School children have six weeks holiday (longer for private schools).
In most states of Australia, state schools have six weeks of holidays at the end of the year, during summer, one week at Easter, two weeks in June-July and two weeks in September-October, and about a week's worth of pupil-free days at various times through the year. This works out to 55-58 school days in total, not counting public holidays. However, many private schools have longer holidays, with some schools offering closer to 14 weeks' holiday through the year. Therefore, on average, school children get between 55 and 70 days' holiday.
Regular public schools are Mon-Fri from 9:00am to 3:20pm. Terms are 9-11 weeks, with two week holidays between each term, and a six week holiday over summer. This is a regular South Australian schedule; private schools and other states may differ.
The actual Christmas holiday is just Christmas Day. Most people (but generally not department stores) also have Boxing Day, 26 December, as a holiday. School children have six weeks holiday (longer for private schools).

No. Australia's school terms have nothing to do with seasons in the northern hemisphere. Australian school children have between six and nine weeks' holiday in December and January (depending on whether they attend a state school or a private school). The school year is divided into four terms, with several weeks' holiday separating each of the other terms.
