Many believe its because of the culture that we have set up for them all the way back when they were slaves. We would separate the families that they would make and often even control their breeding. So the father and child contact was unlikely.
When they were freed from slavery it was not a common part in their ways to
take the loving father/husband role. The sons repeat the fathers actions and so its
passed down all the way to today.
I would also like to note that the tribes in Africa which they were taken from also didn't have the family structure that we are familiar with. They were tribal and lived like such.
I personally believe its wrong for us to expect them to conform to what we believe a family should be.
