California was part of a large Spanish Colonial settlement in North America that included St. Augustine, Florida and Sante Fe, New Mexico. The San and Santa prefixes for many California cities is remnant of the Spanish Missions and other settlements that spanned the area that is now the state of California. There are thousands of Spanish names of lakes, towns, states, and other geographic features throughout the U.S., especially in Southwestern states such as California.

Today the state of California is home to many diferent cultures. It was not always so heavily populated with people from different backgrounds and ethnicities. Before the Gold Rush in 1848 ,California had few visitors. Its primary inhabitants were California Indians, who lived in hundreds of differend t tribes up and down the coast. The California Indians were hunters and gatherers. They survived by living off the ldnd for thousads of years. Their lives were changed dramatically by the arrival of Spanish colonists. The Spanish had arrived in what is now Mexico, years before the Gold Rrush. They wanted to expand their control up the coast of California . They decided to build a chain of 21 missions along the coast.A mission is a place where people teach others about a certain religion and other aspects of a foreign way of life or culture. The first California mission was built in 1769. By 1823, there were 21 missions along the coast of California, stretching from SanDiego to Sonoma. Mission Santa Clara de Asis was the eighth California mission founded by the Spanish and one of the first Spanish mission in the northern region of California. Each mission was started in hopes of attracting Local California Indians to live and work at the mission. The land around Mission Santa Clara de Asis was home to tribes of Ohlone Indians.
