This is a great observation; one answer would probably be, because the person who makes such a judgment is uneducated and there are very many uneducated, loud mouths in the world. People who are educated realize that many mentally ill people, actually have above average intelligence.
Just for instance the Unibomber. Ted Kaczynski was extremely bright, he was accepted to Harvard at age 16. Graduated with a Ph.D. in mathematics from UM Ann Arbor - then spent two years at UC Berkeley as an assistant professor, working in complex analysis. All before the age of 30 and all things you won't find your run of the mill, high school drop out accomplishing.
We are a very visual society, used to making snap judgments about a variety of subjects in a single, brief glance. If someone doesn't quickly fit our narrow view of "normal" we almost without conscious thought, file the image away. We see an image of an unkept person, with dirty, mismatched clothing, speaking gibberish - maybe the average person sees; "not too bright" (not smart enough to take care of them self) instead of mentally ill. Too ill, to realize they have not been caring for their aesthetic needs.

Probably because of the saying "it is not far from genius to madness."
Most of the people are just jealous of the smart people and they think they get an edge by claiming they are mad. A losers approach, but it does unfortunately work.
The IQ people don't tend to socialize a lot because they get teased a lot.
When the IQ people get fed up with the teasing they might desperately try to do something about it and either hurt somebody or even themselves, and the losers approach is "sane" as
always claiming "See, what did I tell you about ..."

Many people still equate mental illness to insanity, but they are not the same, and in fact, the majority of mentally ill people are not insane.
Some attributes of a mentally ill person include irrational actions, an inability to communicate, and a lack of social skills. Most people with mental illness can be treated with a variety of medication to reduce or eliminate their symptoms.
No, there isn't any correlation between homosexuality and mentally challenged people.
Well according to a psychiatrist I spoke with personally a while back it is possible to have a 'mass psychosis' where two or more people experience the same symptoms as each other. I personally think this is rubbish and was the only way they could explain away something they did not understand. And you can become mentally unwell living with or without mentally ill people/persons. If you are personally attached to the person experiencing mental health issues it can be very taxing emotionally and mentally especially if you have no insight into what the person is experiencing. If you are concerned there are groups for the friends and family of people experiencing 'mental illness'
Spain people are not the same as American money.
100 million people
They start to learn how to do things later than normal people. Like talking and walking. It is found in children under 18. Symptoms usually start at birth or later in childhood.
No
Yes, just as mentally handicapped people can be heterosexual.
They only detain mentally ill people when they pose an immediate threat to themselves or to others.
Most of the mentally ill people were killed in the holocaust. They simply were not kept. That was the "Final Solution."
Many people equate high self-esteem with feelings of self-worth, self-confidence, and self-acceptance. It is often seen as a positive and healthy attitude towards oneself.
