because The Southern states main product was cotton and tobacco and this required a large amount of labor to produce it. They did not see a better way to grow cotton. So for someone to take away their slave labor meant that they would lose their businesses and the economy would fail.
i think there is still slavery in the world. who's to stop it from happening. some places are still under slavery because some countries don't really care. they just care about the money they will get.
