It is dependent on the type of plants and animals that grew in the particular areas millions of years ago. Peaty swamplands produced coal deposits, while more tropical vegetation produced oil or Bitumen deposits. Dry savannas and forested areas with high mineral contents instead created no fossil fuels due to the high likelihood of aerobic decomposition of undergrowth. While some forests produced "petrified" fossilized wood, in the absence of sufficient water to decompose the vegetation.
