Does the car have fog lights? I have a 2003 Sunfire that the high beams would not work on. This was caused by a short in the fog light wiring. I had the fog lights rewired separate from the harness (about $100) and the problem was fixed.
Seperate circuits I believe.
Normally caused by faulty dimmer switch.
As a guess both low beams are burnt out The daytime running and high beams are the same light filament. Or the fuse or the relay for the low beams.
I have a 98 sunfire gt and i have only high beams which only switch on sometimes and no low beams just day lights my shop told me it could be wiring or turn signal switch they looked and determined it was the switch so i just ordered it. They can be found on carpartwholesale.com or autopartwarehouse.com for only 30 or 70 with cruise control. only need a torx wrench and small screwdriver to replace it just snaps into the wiring harness.
It might be the high/low beam switch. Had to replace one on my '96 when I had only low beams.
Have you checked the drl relay?
the problem is the switches themselves, just poorly designed.
In normal traffic always use low beams. High beams are for greater visibility forward when there are no oncoming vehicles.
you need to change the bulbs Once the running lights burn out the rest of the bulb doesn't work right one of my low beams went out and the running light would flash a light out display and the rest of the lights would work right. I replaced it and everything went back to normal You can also try replacing the DRL (daytime running light) relay in the fuse box on the side of the dash. It pulls right out...$12 for replacement. From my experience the problem may not have to do with the DRL, but with the turn signal switch / headlight switch module. These are approximately 59.00. You will need a steering wheel puller, screwdriver (flathead), and possibly pliers. Be sure to disconnect the battery before servicing though.
Not uncommon in that model; apparently the wiring harness is weak at the low-beam wire; read more in the forum below. gminsidenews.com/forums/f53/1997-pontiac-sunfire-headlights-40665/
Do your headlights work? High beams more specifically? If that answer is yes, then the bulbs are fine. DRLs are nothing more than a lower voltage being sent to the high beams in the Sunfires. (They use 9007 HB5 bulbs, which is a dual filament. highs and lows in one bulb). IF the LOW beams work, but not the high, try new bulb. Otherwise its off to try and find that relay... which is a pain in the ass. Personally, I pulled my relay out and never put it back in (I have HIDs in the car now).
you may have a bad relay. If both of them are out, that is probably the relay for the high beams or it could also be a fuse.
