The conventions used to actually choose the nominees for president and vice-presidents. Nowadays, these nominations are virtually locked up before the convention, due to primary elections and caucus selection, so the convention serves to confirm the nominations and whip up enthusiasm for the campaign. They still write a platform, I think, but this is mostly an idle exercise.
