Shifting Tectonic PlatesThey move because the hot air compressed underneath them builds up and it must be let out somewhere. This then moves tectonic plates forcing them to rub up against each other creating pressure. Eventually these plates will either crack or brake resulting in an earthquake.

Like a jiggsaw puzzel, the Earth's crust is broken up into tectonic plates that move. When they colide they create what we call an EARTHQUAKE .

There is no concrete evidence to formulate an acceptible theory, but the most popular idea is that endogenic convection currents cause the asthenosphere to "circle" beneath the lithosphere and cause these plates to move.

Tectonic plates move due to convection currents underneath the Earth's crust - in the layer known as the Mantle. Due to this constant movement, the Earth's plates are constantly moving; sometimes colliding with each other (destructive), sliding past each other (conservative) or pulling away from each other (constructive). I could probably tell you what this means, but you'd have to ask another question ;)).

Hope this helps.

I'm not sure if what I found is entirely true, but the book I read said that scientists are not really sure. The book said that scientists thought that maybe it came from the mantle, where it is very hot. As the heat from mantle is released, it goes up to the crust in waves. These waves cause the tectonic plates to move with them.

The tectonic plates are actually floating on the surface of the semi-molten magma.

What causes tectionic plates to be pulled apart?

Plates at our planet's surface move because of the intense heat in the Earth's core that causes molten rock in the mantle layer to move. It moves in a pattern called a convection cell that forms when warm material rises, cools, and eventually sink down. As the cooled material sinks down, it is warmed and rises again.

Which is the most common tectonic or volcanic earthquakes?

What causes continental plates to move?

the continental plates are caused when silicon, silica and dioxid combined together making the plates split and then it causes the plates to move.
