The name says it all. Back then households often had their telephone wall mounted to the kitchen wall. The kitchen was often the busiest place in the house as well as the noisiest. It made sense to have the phone where you could hear it. If you were in the noisy kitchen and the phone was elsewhere you would miss a lot of calls. Back then there weren't voicemails, answering machines, or caller Id to check later.
