The June Bonfire Festival (Festas Juninas) in Brazil are a tradition originally in honor of St. John. It is said that for letting others and the Virgin Mary know when John had born, his mother Elizabeth told that she would light a fire and stand a pole with a doll on top, so from a distance others could know of his birth. So she did and John was born on June 24.

The festival was called Joanina before. Now it is dedicated to St. Anthony (June 13), St. John (June 24) and St. Peter (June 29). June bonfire festivals occur at squares, clubs, schools and churches and consist in a mock country wedding by light of bonfires as well as games, music, dance and fireworks.
