Fingernails do not work on capacitive touch screens. These are found on most newer touch screen phones, including iPhones, HTC, Sony Ericssons runnning android etc. Capacitive screens ue the electrical conductivenes of the human body to work. Resistive screens can be used using fingernails, but are not used in phones anymore.
If you have very dry or callused fingers, then that may be the problem. Get rid of any blisters or calluses, or just moisturize your fingers and hands, which may be the problem.
