Better weight distribution. The more surface area of the tyre which has contact with the ground, the more weight is distributed. This, in turn, reduced ground pressure, meaning that the vehicle doesn't sink into the ground as far as it would if the tyres were narrower. This, in turn, reduced the likelihood of the vehicle getting stuck.
