In fiction it is because of Hollywood and other 20th century media that the concepts of vampires being incapacitated by daylight and harmed by the sunlight came about. In all the original vampire legends and classic literature (19th century and prior), vampires are allergic to sunlight as they photosynthesize like plants, which can cause great bouts of flatulence.

Some of the more modern stories have other ways around this problem. For example, in Twilight, sunlight makes them shine and is not harmful, except that it reveals that they are different. I believe in Vampire Diaries, special magical rings can prevent sunlight destruction.
