It coincided with a Christian rite called the Feast of the Annunciation, when the Angel Gabriel told the Virgin Mary she was to be the mother of Jesus. When the New Year was changed to January 1, the people who changed to the new holiday called people who celebrated the old one "April fools."

I think so. However in Colombia we do celebrate the same thing but is not in April and is called innocents day. It is the same procedure as the U.S. I have heard that in France they have a similar "April fools day"
