Why do we have language?

The purpose and origin of language has been a conundrum to linguists and anthropologists since it was first posed. The practical application of language is obvious: communicative purposes. Beyond that, the manner in which language influences the brain, how the brain processes language, how language develops to begin with, and a myriad of other questions have plagued field experts for centuries, and remain, for the most part, unanswered and mysterious.

Cynics say that the purpose of language is to disguise our intent; to deceive; to lie. Communication, per se, does not require language, but betrayal does. Some lower animals, fish and insects for example, may have built-in lures or false features for the purpose of ensnaring prey or evading predation, but only a human can look you in the eye and tell you a lie. Other animals may or may not be able to talk/communicate with each other but so far there has been no evidence to support each side of the Long going argument.

Language allows us to communicate complex ideas, share knowledge, and connect with others on a deeper level. It helps us express emotions, convey thoughts, and build relationships. Language also plays a key role in shaping culture, passing on traditions, and fostering a sense of belonging within a community.
