You don't really need the "HTTP" in front of an internet address, but it's mostly because it's implied. The "HTTP" means that the internet address you are going to is going to a regular web page. (HTTP stands for "Hyper Text Transfer Protocol".)
There are a bunch of different prefixes you may see on an internet address:
HTTP - For regular, non-secure web pages.
HTTPS - For secure web pages (i.e. purchase pages where you type in your credit card information).
FTP - For downloading a file from a server. (FTP stands for "File Transfer Protocol".)
The reason I say above that the "HTTP" is implied is because most of the time, when someone is typing in an internet address into a browser, they want a regular web page, so "HTTP" is the default.

You have to use it because it is the foundation of the World Wide Web. That is why when you are opening a file in your browser it does not show "http://". Because it is not on the internet.
