Whales actually migrate both North and South, depends on where they're living from the equator. Whales living on the Southern hemisphere will migrate between the colder waters more South (e.g. Southern Argentina or colder seas below Australia) and migrate to near the equator, while Northern whales tend to live near the Arctic circle, migrating South till also nearly the equator. The reason for this is the balance between the need to reproduce and the need to eat. Polar seas may be very nutritious, but the cold waters are an extremely hostile environment for a baby whale. And while the warm waters at the equator are nice for the young whales, there's hardly enough food for a whale to live off. So, in annual cycles, the whales will migrate from the poles to feed, to the equator to calve or to mate. The whales will actually hardly eat anything for months, causing them to lose massive amounts of body weight until they return to their colder feeding grounds again.

Frequently dolphins swim closer to shore so they will be closer to the fish they eat. They also feel close to shore will be safer from killer whales.

They often swim closer to shore when the fish or coral reefs are near the coast.Often they go in packs. One will beach itself and others will follow.\

No. According to research, very young whales usually do not head to breeding grounds, and females not wishing to mate that season will stay in the feeding grounds. Also animals too old, who no longer feel the urge to mate, or perhaps older females no longer going into estrus will not migrate.
