Humans are developed to breathe air by gas exchange in the lungs. We do not have the physical capability, like fish, to have a gas exchange with water.

Also, because your heart is pumping and you need a lot of oxygen for your blood. The same with any physical activity.

you drown because the water is going into your lungs and you cant braeth underwater unless you have gills
