Most men I know in this type of relationship have very low self confidence. They stick around because they often feel no one else would want them, and being treated poorly is better than being alone. It is hard to get them to see this is not the case. A friend of mine that was in a long term abusive relationship finally got up the will power to leave, and it was a short time later when he found someone that is really good to him. He said he realized there was a difference between being dependent on someone, and really loving someone and having them love you back. It is very hard to break the mentally abusive ties, especially when you feel bad about yourself, but there are people out there that will care about you and treat you better.
