The 1944 hurricane that swept up the East Coast and New England hit without warning and killed about 390 people. Even though World War II was still being fought some in Washington decided we needed a hurricane warning system.
This is the order that came to our Privateer Squadron flying out of Jacksonville, Florida.
Washington orders military to develop hurricane-warning system. Navy Privateer aircraft and crews back from Pacific War chosen for task. Squadron 114 was formed and flying out of Masters Field, Miami, Florida we took on the task to develop the the first Hurricane Warning system.
