Why do you need to improve sources of energy that are not fossil fuels?

To avoid using fossil fuels.
It's not that using fossil fuels is a problem, really. It's that we are so many people on the planet now that everything we do that is not having a zero-impact on the environment is destroying it. Therefore, we need to control the use of fossil fuels, and building wind turbines, solar power plants, tidal generators and the like, is "better" than simply cutting the power and banning cars. Which we would eventually have to. Not just because of the pollution, but also because there is a limited amount of fossil fuels. And if the infrastructure starts collapsing due to a lack of fossil fuels, there will be much whining and gnashing of teeth. So we strive to improve on our energy gathering technologies, in order to avoid a scenario where we run out of energy.
