If you have not identified it, it might be something that could hurt or kill you if you put it in your mouth.

There are weak acids (as vinegar--acetic acid) and weak bases (like baking soda--sodium bicarbonate) that you could consume--but that assumes you already know what they are. If you taste an unknown subatance that turns out to be sulfuric acid, that's bad news!
