Red Pikmin are arguably the simplest Pikmin, in both form and function. They have high attack power and can withstand fire, whereas the other types of Pikmin look stranger and have a wider variety of uses. Also, you do not come into fire hazards early in either game, which means the more common electric and water hazards block a larger area of the world. Lastly, white and purple Pikmin could not be the first Pikmin you get in Pikmin 2 because they can only be created in caverns you need Pikmin to enter in the first place.
Red Bulborbs are a staple of the series, having been as ubiquitous in the games as Goombas are in Mario games. They will almost definitely be in Pikmin 3, though nothing has been announced about it yet.
The red pikmin don't have names their just red pikmin, but if you like there is a famous let's player who calls it Steve so by all means do so yourself.
The main characters are Olimar and the red, yellow, and blue Pikmin.
No. The only Bulborbs in Pikmin 3 are the Red and Orange varieties.
It serves as a spike to increase their attack power against enemies. It is also seen in the first Pikmin game, and will likely appear in every Pikmin game in the series.
Olimar named the Pikmin such because of their similarity to the red, blue, and yellow pikpik carrots in his favorite soup.

Red Pikmin cause fire damage, Yellow Pikmin cause electrical damage, Blue Pikmin cause regular damage, Purple Pikmin cause considerable damage, and White Pikmin cause poison damage.

No, they did not exist at that time. Only red, blue, and yellow Pikmin are available in the first Pikmin game. There are only white and purple Pikmin in Pikmin 2. They have no Onions, and can only be found by tossing any Pikmin into purple or white Candypop Buds. These flowers can only be found in underground caverns, which were not present in the original Pikmin. The flowers disappear after a certain amount of uses, and thus only certain amounts of purple and white Pikmin can be attained at one time.
