The United States of America was founded on the principals of freedom of choice and individual rights. Socialism takes away many of these rights, so Americans will never have very many socialist policies.
You really need to narrow your question down a bit. A lot of Jews embraced Christianity, and, over the next several centuries, a lot of pagans embraced Christianity.
The Roosevelt Administration was remarkably unsuccessful in reviving the American economy in the 1930s; everything that they tried was a failure. Recent study has suggested that the socialist aspects of his economic policies and the monetary contraction that stifled business were precisely the WRONG policies for the time. The American economy didn't really start to revive until the start of World War II in September of 1939, and the economic stimulus caused by the sudden spike in military production.
Historically, "Democratic Republic" usually meant "socialist". "People's Democratic Republic" (or "Democratic People's Republic" meant "really, REALLY socialist".
It really depends on how you look at it. Techincally a completely socialist society has never been achieved for a substantial period of time. Most "socialism" in history really turned out to be more of a dictatorship. However, many aspects of democratic government have socialist qualities. For example, free health care in England is considered by many to be socialist. Technically, any service provided by the government like public schools or transportation is socialist. So is socialism possible? Yes and no.

There is really no country like America.
