it is easier to travel on water.
In 1801, President Thomas Jefferson chose an armyofficer named Meriwether Lewis to lead an expedition through our country's new frontier.'' He knew Lewis would not be able to make the journey by himself, so he chose William Clark to travel with him. They rode a mini boat called a keelboat'' it was like a raft too. They rowed or sailed too.
It is a lot easier to travel this way, rather than on foot or horse, and less tiring. They also knew that the rivers would flow towards an ocean which was one of the goals of their journey, they knew it would lead them in the right direction.

Lewis was the main explorer who chose which path to take and Clark was the one to map the areas they traveled
Lewis and Clark kept journals so that they could report their discoveries to President Jefferson. At the time, Jefferson had just bout the Louisiana Territory and he needed to know what was over there. He chose Lewis, who was his personal secretary to go on an expedition and Lewis chose Clark to accompany him and be his second in command. They basically just needed to write down everything that would have been useful for president Jefferson.
Meriwether Lewis was well qualified for the first overland expedition to the Pacific Northwest. Lewis personally chose William Clark to be co-captain of the Corps of Discovery. I hope this helps :)
Their full names were "Meriwether Lewis" and "William Clark." Both did not have a middle name.("Gable" is not William Clark's middle name. You're thinking of the American film actor William Clark Gable.)meriwether Lewis William clarkcontrary to popular belief,,,,,,William Clarke, actually spelled his LAST name with an E at the end,,Nicholas Biddle chose to omit that when he re-wrote the journals.
