George Orwell isn't against communism. He actually was a communist. He was against the fascism that the Soviet Union essentially became.
Animal Farm by George Orwell reflects the rise of communism in Russia under the leadership of Joseph Stalin. The story parallels the Russian Revolution and Stalin's totalitarian regime through the characters and events in the novel. The philosophy of Marxism and the failures of the Soviet system are evident throughout the book, highlighting themes of power, corruption, and the consequences of absolute rule.
These more extreme ideologies arose in the tumultuous climate of the Great Depression, both the extreme right with fascism and the extreme left with communism. Admittedly, the Soviet Union's communism is a product of the Russian Revolutions after World War I, but the regime got progressively more extreme in the 1930s.
Using his novel Animal Farm Orwell uses the characters to mock the Russian revolution. He does this by using Animal Characteristics rather than using human characteristics, for example Orwell uses the character Napoleon to represent Joseph Stalin from the Russian Revolution, because pigs are greedy for food and Stalin was greedy for power so Orwell created a resemblance between Stalin and a greedy pig.
George Orwell was critical of communism, which he believed resulted in totalitarian regimes and the suppression of individual freedom. His books "Animal Farm" and "1984" are often seen as critiques of authoritarian states like the Soviet Union, using allegory and dystopian themes to highlight the dangers of centralized power. Orwell himself fought in the Spanish Civil War against the communist forces, further illustrating his opposition to the ideology.
George Orwell was inspired to write "Animal Farm" by his observations of the Russian Revolution and the rise of Stalinism in the Soviet Union. The story is an allegorical critique of totalitarianism and political corruption, using animals on a farm to represent different aspects of society and government. Orwell aimed to highlight the dangers of political power and the manipulation of language for propaganda purposes.
