American colonists didn't really support the Continental Army because they had a general fear of the ramifications of a standing national army. They thought an army under the command of an executive was in direct opposition to the freedom they were fighting for.

Early in the war, most of the people did not really support the war effort. They did not have much extra income or material goods. The common people did not have a great deal to gain by fighting England. Some people viewed the war as an upper class kind of thing. The people of the four New England states were the only ones to strongly support independence at first and they were suffering from blockaded ports and a lack of basic goods. New York City and New Jersey were dominated by Loyalists. The southern states needed English merchants to buy the goods they produced and did not want an embargo.
Only later on, when Washington and Greene started to show some surprising strength, did the people really begin to rally and support the troops.
