Because they feel a sense of security being surrounded by big tough guys with guns. Then they become addicted to everything they do, when they realize what they're doing is wrong, its to late and they're to scared to quit because now the rest of the gang is ready to shoot them if they quit.
They usually join out of fear. Young people tend to recognize at an emotional level that they are truly incapable of dealing with the world and feel as though they would be empowered if they belong to something larger. Sometimes their "friends" invite them to become a member of a gang and there can be some intimidation, which plays right into their emotional feeling of weakness.
