Quite intelligent in his way - what is now called 'Emotional Intelligence'. His problem was that his parents were trying to turn him into an intellectual, and they over-educated him. He reacted strongly against this, and never wanted to open a book, until his old age, when he took up reading sea-novels.
The Bolsheviks, who were students of Marx, believed that the Russian power structure should be overthrown and power should be given to the architects of the revolution (i.e. themselves). The other half of the revolutionary faction, the Mensheviks favored interaction from the workers and farmers. After Russia's humiliation in World War I, food and work shortages, and the promise of the redistribution of land, the Bolsheviks were able to gain the support of the people.
The Red side, as opposed to the White and Green sides. The Reds were the Bolshevik and other socialist political party forces aligned with them, and not all of the socialists. The Whites were mostly imperialists who wanted the Bolsheviks thrown out. Some Whites wanted the Tsar restored to the throne, but some Whites just wanted a new government that was bot ruled by the Bolsheviks. The Greens were anarchists who wanted no government but just to be left alone to live their own lives. They knew that no matter what type of government came in, they would still be oppressed. And they were.
After the revolution, the Russian Social-Democratic Labor Party became ineffectual and was subsequently split into two factions. The Bolsheviks, led by Lenin, insisted all power and decisions be reserved for the revolutionaries while the Mensheviks, led by Marton wanted an all inclusive party whose members could differ and debate on certain points.
It was really just the difference in political ideology and how both capitalists and communists saw eachother. The Bolsheviks thought communism was right, and the capitalists thought capitalism was. Both had their own advantages and disadvantages. But the idea of world communism died with Trotsky; the USSR did not want to risk their power in starting a major conflict with another country. And it wasnt just the communists wanting to overthrow capitalism; the reason the USA and the USSR went into the cold war is because the US wanted to stop the spread of communism.
The Bolsheviks wanted a Marxist society, while the Romanovs were Imperial and not fond of the Marxist views of a communist way of life. So the Bolsheviks needed to take them down to get what they wanted.

The Bolsheviks and Mensheviks
The name of the followers of Lenin was "Bolsheviks" to be distinguished from the opposing group known as the "Mensheviks." The two sides were referred to as the Red Army (Bolsheviks and their revolutionary supporters) and the White Army ( nonrevolutionaries who either wanted the Tsar restored to the throne or depose Lenin and the Bolsheviks. In addition to the Reds and Whites there were the Greens, who were anarchists.
The Winter Palace was the headquarters for the Provisional Government. The Bolsheviks did not like how the government was being run so they wanted to take over. A major thing they wanted to change was to take them out of the war.
