To understand that we need to understand the Cold War as much as it can be understood.

The USA and its Allies Against The Soviet Union and its Allies like Cuba.

The whole Cold War was based on the idea of a deterrent called "Mutually Assured Destruction" With the entirely appropriate acronym of "MAD".

The USA had used their influence and Allies to place Medium and Short Range Nuclear Missiles in Europe targeting the Soviet Block Countries.

The Soviet Union had no equivalent Deterrent targeting Mainland USA.

Cuba wanted to be supportive of their Friends in Communist Soviet Union and as they were very unhappy with the USA and the embargo that had harmed their Economy.

So these factors lead to the placement of Soviet medium range Missiles in Cuba and the Cuban Missile crises .

Why were missiles sent to Cuba?

To avoid war between the Soviet Union & the United States. The Soviet Union also realized the mistake of putting its nuclear weapons in Cuba where Castro could gain control of them. Castro's communist Cuba would have had the potential to start a world-wide nuclear war, even if the Soviet Union didn't want it. Also the Soviet Union was building submarines that could launch nuclear weapons against the United States, so the weapons in Cuba would not be as important as before.

What event from the 1960s do you think contributed most to increasing cold war tension?

The Cuban Missile Crisis of 1962 significantly heightened Cold War tensions, as it brought the United States and the Soviet Union to the brink of nuclear war. When the U.S. discovered Soviet nuclear missiles stationed in Cuba, it led to a tense 13-day standoff, culminating in a naval blockade and intense diplomatic negotiations. The crisis underscored the precarious nature of U.S.-Soviet relations and led to increased military build-ups and a more aggressive stance from both superpowers in the years that followed.
