Romulus and Remus were twin sons of the roman god, Mars.

Mars had a wife, Rhea. Rhea thought that the other gods and goddesses were going to hurt her, her father, her sons and her husband, to she put them in a basket and put them in the river to drift away.

After a while a she-wolf found them and fed them with her milk.

Later on A shepherd adopted the two brothers.

They both had a dream, to become king. They would often argue about who would make a better king. Angrily, Romulus picked up a rock, threw it at his brothers head and killed him.

He made himself king.

Romulus' importance was that he was the founder of Rome. He became the ruler of the Palatine Hill and surrounded it with walls. This was called the square Rome because this Hill is square. Romulus then united the people of the surrounding hill under a single state which he headed himself. Romans of the late Republic were eager to determine the date that Romulus founded the city. Some priests anda weathy citizen named Varro, were also eager to learn the date of Romulus' birth. In this manner they believed that a horoscope could be created that would show Rome's future.

The stories of the kings are semi-legendary, which means that part of them are clearly fictional, but other parts could be factual. This has lead to these stories often being dismissed altogether. However, Archaeology has had a tendency to confirm at least some facts of some of them. Recently, the remains of a wall and a gate which may well be that of the Square Rome have been found. They have been dated to the mid 8th century, which is the time which was given by the Romans as the date of the foundation of Rome. The foundations of the regia (royal house) and the early temples of Rome have also been found and have been dated to the same period. Thus, it seems that the story of Romulus may not have been entirely made up.

One part of the story gave the Romans a multiethnic identity. The Sabines attacked Rome, but made peace and settled on the Quirinal and Viminal Hills. Titus Tatius, the king of the Sabines, co-ruled with Romulus for 5 years. Thus, the Romans saw Rome as the product of a fusion between Latins and Sabines. Some patrician clans claimed Sabine origin.

One part of the story which is dubious was that Romulus and Remus were born into the royal family of Alba Longa. The Romans fancied themselves as descendants of the Trojans. The Roman legend of Aeneas, a Trojan, has him landing in Latium (land of the Latins) and founding the city of Lavinium. His son then founded the city and royal dynasty of Alba Longa. Having the twins as born into the Royal family of Alba Longa created the Trojan connection and bridged the 400 year-gap between the dates of the Trojan war and the foundation of Rome.
