Of the three fossil fuels (coal, oil and natural gas), gas releases least carbon dioxide (CO2), so if fossil fuel has to be used, gas is the best.

Gas is also cleaner burning, and easier to "transport" than coal or oil. Gas can be delivered in canisters or through a pipeline from the street. Cleaning and tuning of burners and furnaces is easier as well, plus there is no objectionable smells from normal use. Oil and coal both produce soot and ash, and require a regular service delivery, and more frequent maintenance.

What type of fuel is used in the central heating system?

A central heating system is one that heats the whole house from one location. Natural or bottled gas and heating oil are widely used as fuel. Electric heat pumps are common in milder climates. Coal used to be used but is not common in the US nowadays.

How is coal turned into gases?

Coal is burned and the gases evolved collected. Coke is the residue. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ NO. coke is not made by burning coal. Burning the coal is the last thing that you want to to do. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- This gas production method was widely used before natural gas was developed. The resulting gas is a mixture of hydrogen, methane, carbon monoxide, and ethylene. As well as for cooking and heating it was widely used for lighting. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- You get coke by heating coal in a large airtight oven because you do NOT want the coal to burn. Among other products that you get besides the ones listed above, you get coal tar, ammonia, and sulfur compounds. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

What is destructive distillation of coal?

Destructive distillation of coal is heating coal in a retort until its chemical structure breaks down (destructive or nonreversible). The products are: coal gas, coal tar, and coke. Ordinary distillation is reversible by just remixing the products. Destructive distillation is nonreversible.

Why do you need coal?

We use coal to burn. Coal is a store of energy that can be used for direct heating. running boilers. turbines for electricity, gas can also be extracted from it. and it is cheap. coal ca be replaced wit nuclear energy which can produce energy. However the coal lobby is very powerful and certain country's stand to lose a lot of money if it is left in the ground.

Which substances provide energy?

Why do lots of homes use natural gas for central heating instead of Coal or Oil?

It is cleaner burning and can be pipe in from long distances. Has a continues supply unlike coal or oil that has to be trucked in and stored on site.

Is coal very important?

Coal was a very important heating factor in the early days, sadly, coal has now been replaced by gas/electric central heating, which is a probably a lot cleaner, safer and easier for modern day living.

How did you heat your homes before gas central heating?

people used to use coal fires, and gas and electric fires have been round for years and years, but coal fires was the prefered method

How does oil central heating compare to gas central heating?

Oil central heating tends to be more expensive when compared to gas central heating as the price for heating oil tends to be higher when compared to natural gas. The price of heating oil also tends to be more volatile than natural gas.

What are three methods of heating?

gas, wood, coal

Why do humans use natural gas for heating instead of coal or oil?

It burns cleaner, doesn't have an offensive odor, and in most markets it is cheaper.

How can you conserve coal in a sustainable manner?

Find replacements for things that often use coal. Instead of coal BBQs, get gas ones. Instead of coal fireplaces, use wood or gas.

What is cheaper for electric usage radiators or central heating?

The cheapest option between electric, radiators and central heating is Gas Central Heating. The reason that gas is cheaper than electric is because electricity costs 4-6 times more than gas.

Where can one find rates on British gas and central heating prices?

British Gas has a website where they publish rates on gas and central heating. They also offer information on how to get a unit installed, and other options for heating and cooling your home.
