Most people want scholarships simply because they are sources of "free" money. While the application process often involves work in and of itself (such as the Answers.com scholarship) many scholarships are designed simply to reward what you've already done, by examining standardized test scores or high school transcripts. Additionally, more so then the money that accompanies it, scholarship recognition feels wonderful because it serves as a reminder that there are people who we've never met who care about our lives and are willing to reward excellence.
