This question is rather difficult to answer, being that there is really nothing to go off of other than repeatedly dying fish. One of the fish probably introduced a viral, or bacterial, pathogen into the tank which has spread to the other tankmates and consiquentely caused them to die. Raise the salt concentration in the tank to 0.3% and treat the tank for parasites using an antiparasitic. It is also recommended to, if a bacterial pathogen is suspect, feed the fish an antibiotic food. If this does not help and all the fish die anyways you'll want to sterilize the tank before adding any new fish. You can do this using bleach as long as you let the tank sit for a couple days afterward.

i like the above answer however, i have an extensive knowledge of tropical fish-keeping and know about the benefits of using bleach as a cleaning agent & have thought about it but would never use it, to much risk involved.

cold water fish are for beginner's, i would recommend getting a water test by taking a clean bottle half full of your tank water to your local reputable fish shop.

Depends on one's definition of cold. If by cold you mean sea-temperature, then yes there aren't many tropical fish who'd be fond of this. If you mean room temperature, there are many fish which will survive and indeed thrive in these conditions. Mountain-cloud minnows are particularly fond of the 18-24c temperature range and should freely breed in this.

If your aquarium water is too cold (20 would be too cold for a lot of common fish like guppies, platys and neon tetras for example) then the fish will be a lot less active in the tank, lose colour and swim with clamped fins.

This depends on the kind of fish, if it is a tropical fish, warm water is better. Hot water is not a good idea to use because I am pretty sure it can kill the fish. Most of the time you should use cold water....

Fish are cold blooded. So theirtemperatureis due to their surroundingtemperature. So if the water is hot their body temperature is hot. Fish doesn't have lungs. They have gill instead. They drink water with their mouth and keep the oxygen in the water and let out the water with it's gills.

Can you convert your fresh water fish tank into tropical without killing the fish?

You can definitely do that, but you haven't made it clear that you have cold water in the tank before. If you can keep the water temperature at 72 F, then you can keep both cold water fishes like gold fishes and non-aggressive community tropical fishes like gouramis, platys, mollies, algae eaters etc with gold fish.
