This sputtering tells us that there isn't the proper fuel/air/spark. I would start by replacing plug wires, plugs, and the fuel filter. Check timing and put it on a diagnostic computer. I'm having a similar problem now and believe I have a couple of injectors with too much carbon buildup that need replacement. I am getting ready to take my 2000 3.0L Ford Ranger XLT to the shop and see what codes she throws (after I recently replaced spark plugs with nice iridium ones, plug wires, and a new fuel filter). I know my particular problem is spark as I can smell the fuel from the cylinder(s) that isn't/aren't firing. I would start with plugs because they are the cheapest! I forget the gap but they can tell you at the auto parts store. Good luck - ! I will try to return with results from my diagnostic!
