It could be the 4WD actuator switch. I believe it also detects other problems in the system and limits engagement as damage prevention measure...like low diff. oil.

You did not say what year it was, and that makes a difference. But you can check these things--- U-joints in front drive shaft, Front CV joints and axel shafts.
