If the idle is too high, it is likely the Throttle Position Sensor (TPS). If repeatedly stopping and restarting the vehicle solves the issue (temporarily) then the TPS is the problem. It is a $40 part that is attached to the throttlebody intake. I believe it is attached with a couple of "6-point star" screws, not sure the technical term. It should be easily replaceable for 30 minutes labor, or a do-it-yourself type person, with such a screwdriver accessible from the rear of the motor.

mine does that too on my 97 lumina, no idea why
Had the same problem w/ a '92 lumina a couple years back. the car would barely idle and stall or idle and pick up speed until it got to like 30. forget what the part's called, but it gets clogged up and just has to be cleaned out. not too expensive. guess its common w/ luminas and cavaliers
I have a Lumina too and most commonly its 3 coil packs
There could be a vacuum leak somewhere causing the engine to idle too fast. It would also cause the engine to run too lean and possibly burn a piston.
Might want to check your vaccum hoses. Sounds like a leak, maybe on the vaccum advance
one of the main reasons an engine runs on or diesels can be related to the fact that it is idling too fast. Set the idling down and see if this imporoves
17 TO 19 INCHES AT A IDLE. 18 to 21 inches at idle, and the above answer is close enoungh too.
there isn't one the pcm does it,so if your having idle issue ,you need to get it too a shop to have it scanned
YOU CAN'T. It is not adjustable and is NOT to be tampered with. VERY important to leave it alone. You have another problem with the engine sensors if it is idleing to fast are to slow. Is the check engine light on ? If it is you need to have the engine SCANNED with an engine scanner.Check for vacuum leak that will cause it to idle to fast. TPS/ Throttle position sensor may be bad too.
Vacuum leak
Idling too fast. Set the idle to factory specs. Should be around 750 RPMs in neutral with A/C off.
