If the light is on then there is something wrong. You will never know this until you stomp on the breaks. You will still have mechanical brakes but the ABS will be non-functional. To find out what is causing the ABS light to stay on you need to check the DTC,s ( Diagnostic Trouble Codes). This can be done without a scan tool. Get an automotive manual for your vehicle and follow the instructions. The code will be numeric and there will be a list of what the code means in the manual.
