This is related to piston slap. When the engine warms up the noise should go away and be near silent. Some early production '02 models had an issue with cylinder sleeves slipping and there is an extension of warranty to 100,000 miles for certain VIN's.
The sound has also been related to cold carbon knock. A can of Techron put into a full tank of fuel has been known to help a lot.
Many members of our enthusiasts website report the same sound and have reduced it significantly by doing the aforementioned fixes. The use of synthetic oil and top tier fuels have also been associated with quieter smoother running engines.

An engine might sound like a diesel at operating temperature if the engine was a diesel or if there was an issue with the manifold. Sometimes gases escaping the manifold cover could cause the engine to sound different.
There could be a few things that can cause this humming sound. It could be the wheel bearings rubbing, it could be the gears rubbing, it could even be coming from the engine pistons.?æ
stabizer bar links that causing the rattling..

Petrol or gasoline in a diesel will cause internal engine damage. if petrol is used in diesel engine it may cause explosive sound with burning ....bcz high compression ratio ......

If there is adulteration in diesel, you will gt late throttle response. There will be ignition delay. A good diesel gives wafer crisp power delivery & quick throttle response. Good quality diesel gives excellent low end torque & strong pulling power from lower RPM. As per obsevation of Multijet engine of FIAT :- In multijet engine, good quality diesel burns with clattery sound on idle. In multijet engine ,at cold start ,Adulterated diesel gives diesel clatter but diesel clattter disappears when engine goes to operating temp. In multijet engine at full operating temperature diesel clatter disappears & engine revs like petrol engine without sound of diesel clatter.
Whatever you do don't buy a junkyard diesel engine. The 350 car diesel was built off of a 350 gas engine at the time. So it did not work well and was very unreliable. I would suggest rebuilding your old diesel, or purchasing a new orre manufactured unit from GM. Theses routes will fix the common problems that made these engines hideously unreliable. GM basically killed most diesel engine car production with this unreliable engine. Everyone assumed every diesel was this bad. That is not the case, most other diesel's such as the Chevette 1.8 Isuzu diesel, and the VW diesel's of the time are very good. Hope I didn't sound preachy, I was just trying to help.
Its a tappet adjustment that to be done for diesel engines to overcome the noisy sound from the engine which get loose by continueously uses of the vehicle .
You have an old car or it's about to be broken.
