Why does trump hate Mexico?

Donald Trump has an interesting compartmentalization regarding immigrants. In one respect, he loves hiring immigrants, going so far as to change laws so that he could hire more immigrants at Trump businesses, while restricting flow of immigrant labor to other possibly competing industries. However, Trump looks down on people who make less money than he does, and immigrants working for the lowest wages do not command much respect from him. They are but tools to be used on his behalf.

Some of Trump's animus towards immigrants comes down to his inherent racism. Trump does not look down upon Caucasian European immigrants as much as he does immigrants from Africa or poor countries. His misconceptions of other nations vastly influence his opinions, as he once said that Nigerian immigrants would never 'go back to their huts'.

As a salesman of himself, Trump has realized that criticizing immigrants is very popular with a certain base of voters. It is part of Trump's brand. His statements attacking immigrants have garnered much vocal support (as well as criticism), and as a narcissist, he loves the support.

Finally, Melania Trump is an immigrant.

I do not think Donald Trump hates Muslims in general. What he hates and fears is terrorists and he seems to think that most terrorists are Muslims, in particular Muslims from certain countries such as Iran and Syria.

Ignorance, racism and xenophobia would be the main reason; also trying -- but failing -- to establish a business in Mexico would be a driving factor, too.
