Because Florida is closer to the equater.

Being closer to the equator is important because of the tilt of the earth's axis. The earth's axis is at an angle, and this angle is greatest on the solstice, zero on the equinox, and then greatest again but in the opposite direction on the next solstice. If you imagine a sphere (Earth is not a perfect sphere but for here its close enough) spinning but on a tilted axis, lit up by a flashlight, you will see that the pole that is further away gets less sunlight (simple geometry/shadows). And so, on average, places near the equator get more sunlight.

You might ask why then doesn't the pole get more sunlight than the equator when that pole is tilted towards the sun - remember, it's not about how CLOSE the place is to the sun (this makes a tiny tiny difference), it's about how much sunlight the place gets due to the SHAPE of the lit area. To really prove this you would have to do the math (calc anyone?) i guess but there's something to go on. Turns out that when all is done you get more sunlight near the equator.

(Sunlight is the starting point to all climate - but it gets so much more complicated from there and not that I would know).

Why do you think it matter if you are close or far away from the equator?

It matters how far or near you are to the equator because the closer you are to the equator the hotter your climate is. For example, the climate in Florida is much warmer than the climate in Canada. This is because the equator is MUCH closer to Florida than it is to Canada.

Why would Florida have a wamer climate than montana?

Because Florida is far more south than Montana. The more close a place is to the equator, the warmer climate there is. This is because the equatorial area of Earth gathers the sunlight more than the north and south areas. More light from the Sun means warmer climate. The Earth is tilted, and that forms the seasons in here. On the polar areas the seasons are more prominent because at winter time the north pole is tilted away from the Sun and gathers less sunlight, while the south pole area is tilted towards sun and gathers more sunlight at the same time. That reverses in summer. Although the poles are far from the Sun in every season so they don't gather nearly as much sunlight than the equatorial area. Equator is almost straight aimed to the Sun at every season, which makes it very hot climate and not prominent seasons.
