The trinity is a way for Christians to reconcile God's immortality with Jesus' mortality. If God is three in one then he can be both immortal and all-powerful and still die to save our sins. The idea of the trinity arose long after Jesus and his disciples died. Hence the Latter day Saint movement and others rejects it entirely, stating God exists separetly from Jesus and the Holy Spirit.
