Because the Mercator projection makes it look so. It " distorts the size and shape of large objects, as the scale increases from the Equator to the poles, where it becomes infinite."
It's basically the side-effect of (mercator) projecting the shpere map onto a flat map.

At just under 14 million square kilometers (5.5 million square miles) Its larger than Russia or Canada or any other country in the world.
And It probably looks big the way we skew it to make the round world appear flat on a flat map.

∙ 14y agobecause the world is round Every thing stretches as it is further north. Imagine the world map drawn on a balloon. Then carefully cut the balloon in half and stretch it out until it is flat on a board. the picture drawn in the middle will be correct however as you go north and south the picture distorts because it has to trenched to be flat.
