India has several parties that take part in an election. There are very few chances of one party to win by a majority, till now only a few times one party has won by a majority. Since there is no single majority parties have enter into a coalition.

as many no of times he is elected as the leader of majority party(or head of a coalition)
The merits of a collation govt is that it is governed by a majority of people. One party cannot do whatever they want. but in India coalition is bad because one of the coalition members are from one of the states and do not represent the whole country. for example the Trinamool Congress of the mad lady Manta, AIADMK of the Jaylalitha The Muslim party of the Samajwadi. In other parts of the world coalition govt. were successful. Those countries prospered under the coalition govt.
Before Independence, there was a single political party. But now, it is coalition because of coming up new political party in every election. Because of so many political party, no one is able to get the majority of votes during the elections. There is a rule to have a 50% votes as well as majority, otherwise they will unable to form a government that's why there is a coalition government.
India got a taste of Coalition Politics at the state level when the Left front comprising of Communist Party of India (CPI), CPI (Marxist) and others formed the first ever Coalition Government in India at West Bengal with Mr. Jyoti Basu as the Chief Minister (succeeded by Mr. Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee) which till date hasn't been defeated. At the national level the first ever coalition government was formed under the Prime Minister ship of Late Shri Morarji Desai Ji which existed from 24th March 1977 to 15th July 1979 headed by now an insignificant Janata Party(who reputation has now been acquired by its breakaway section which formed the Bharatiya Janata Party).Since 1996 Indian Politics has been dominated with Coalition Governments which by far have been stable after a shaky start. The incumbent Prime Minister of India Dr. Manmohan Singh is heading a coalition Government of 15 parties called the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) with Mrs. Sonia Gandhi, widow of Late Shri Rajiv Gandhi Ji being its Chairperson which has now just now been elected for a second term in OfficeCourtesy: http://www.prasannajeetpani.in/2009/06/coalition-politics-in-india-analysis.html
