Why does Israel continue to settle in the Gaza strip if it ceded it to the Palestinians?

As of 2005, there are no more Israeli Settlements in Gaza.
Between 1993-2005, there were several agreements concerning cessions of power to the Palestinians that permitted certain areas to remain in Israeli control. Israel's withdrawal from Gaza was unilateral.

From 1517 until 1917, the land that is now Israel was part of the Ottoman Empire. After that, it was part of the Mandate of Palestine, until it was partitioned into Israel in 1948.

However, the brevity of the period prevented an established Occupation.
