Khrushchev withdrew the missiles from Cuba to prevent World War III and because the US government assured him that they would remove their nuclear arsenal from Turkey. However, the latter part of this agreement was not publicized until much later.

Why did the US government want to remove soviet missiles in cuba?

For the same reason the USSR government wanted the US missiles in Turkey removed. They were seen as a threat and a provocation. Both the US and USSR got the missiles removed that they wanted removed (but the US wanted to pretend removing the missiles in Turkey had no connection to removing the missiles in Cuba for political reasons, and Khrushchev allowed this).

Why did the soviet union want to place nuclear missiles in cube?

After the Bay of Pigs, Cuba needed protection and turned to the USSR. The USSR agreed to place nuclear missiles in Cuba and buy Cuba's sugar which America stopped buying due to the trade embargo. It wanted to place missiles in Cuba as it was only 90 miles away from American soil and the USA had missiles around 90 miles away in Turkey aimed at the USSR.

Why does the US not want missiles in Cuba?

Because the missles that were in Cuba were only 90 miles for Florida and could get to Florida in seconds and all the U.S. in minutes.

When the USSR attempted to install nuclear weapons in cuba JFK ordered what?

Formally he announced a "quarantine" of Cuba. This was a "polite" way of saying blockade without formally saying blockade. If he had formally declared a blockade of Cuba, he would also be implicitly declaring war on Cuba and indirectly with its ally the USSR. He did not want to declare war on the USSR, so he played games with words. The USSR could have easily called his bluff and either ran the "quarantine" or declared that "your quarantine is really a blockade, which is an act of war, we are now at war." However they did not, their ships turned around and the missiles were removed. (secretly in exchange for our removing Jupiter and Thor missiles from Turkey that were already obsolete and on our schedule for removal anyway even without the threat of missiles in Cuba.)

Why did the Cuban missile crisis happen?

Most believe Soviet Premier Kruschev believed the young, newly-elected President Kennedy would not do anything about the Soviets' putting strategic weapons in Cuba. The Cuban Missile Crisis occurred in October 1962. When the Soviet Union secretly put nuclear missiles on the island of Cuba, it nearly started a nuclear war between the U.S. and the Soviet Union. The missiles were discovered by routine spy-plane surveillance. The missiles were still in the process of being made launch-ready. However, President Kennedy had very little time to make a decision regarding what to do about it. His military advisers all but demanded a full-scale air strike, followed by an invasion of the island. Instead, President Kennedy ordered the U.S. Navy to "quarantine" the island by not allowing any Soviet ships to travel to Cuba. This, combined with diplomacy, forced Soviet Premier Kruschev's hand, and the missiles were withdrawn.

Why did the US want the Soviet Union to take out missile launchers from cuba?

Because we had been on the verge of a nuclear war with the Soviet Union for a while. The U.S had tried to assassinate Castro (Cuba's leader) during the Bay of Pigs. Kennedy also said some things that made the Soviet Leader, Khrushchev angry. So, Castro started to buddy up to Khrushchev. The U.S had several military bases throughout the word and our nuclear weapons were all aimed at the Soviet Union but the Soviets didn't have a place to be able to readily attack the U.S. Khrushchev just needed "one place" so he offered to arm Cuba with missiles. Kennedy wanted the missiles out of Cuba to prevent nuclear war.

Why did khrushchev want to build missile silos in Cuba?

Castro thought that the United States would attack Cuba after the Bay of Pigs incident. Russia, as a Cuban ally agreed to help Cuba in that matter making United States under Kennedy to force the removal.

Why were missiles sent to Cuba?

To avoid war between the Soviet Union & the United States. The Soviet Union also realized the mistake of putting its nuclear weapons in Cuba where Castro could gain control of them. Castro's communist Cuba would have had the potential to start a world-wide nuclear war, even if the Soviet Union didn't want it. Also the Soviet Union was building submarines that could launch nuclear weapons against the United States, so the weapons in Cuba would not be as important as before.

Cuban missile crisis cause?

President Kennedy admitted to lack of missile gap unlike Eisenhower. He said that the US was way ahead of the Soviets in the developing missiles. This made Khrushchev (The Soviet leader) look bad. And this angers Cuba a lot especially, after our failed attempt with the Bay of Pigs. Castro starts to buddy up with the Soviets a lot more. Khrushchev doesn't want to see the US take Cuba down. So he offers to arm Castro with weapons. The US has the Soviet Union surrounded with missile sites and the Soviets wants at least one site near the US. If they could get Cuba they would have their "one place". A U2 planes discovered installation sites being built in Cuba by the soviets. Kennedy called together the National Security Council, DOD, etc. to discuss what to do with this. We came up with three options. 1)Invade Cuba-Bay of pigs was a failure. 2) Air Strike- were afraid if we did do that ,t hey would shoot our planes3) Leave it alone. No one was really satisfied with those three option so we decided to Quarantine AKA Blockade Cuba. The Cuban Missile Crisis scared everyone to death; we were on the verge of nuclear war. In 1963 the US and the Soviet Union Signed a nuclear Test Ban Treaty which banned the testing of atomic weapons. A hotline was also set up between Moscow and Washington D.C.

Why did the US want the Soviet Union to remove it's nuclear weapons from Cuba?

Because the nuclear weapons were missiles that could be deployed to the United States. And they were getting ready to launch them. this is lies

Which nation was responsible for the missiles in cuba?

The Soviet Union

What was the impact the Cuban Missile Crisis had on US foreign policy?

After the Cuban Missile Crisis, the US learned how it was our own fears that may have caused the USSR to place missiles in Cuba. We had missiles all around Russsia, and that made them think we were going to attack. There were some important factors that we should have learned. First, we can cause our own destruction by casusing fear in others. Secondly, we should have learned not to trust our own Intel. agency. The CIA reported that none of the missiles in Cuba were armed yet. Later, we found that they were armed. Had Kennedy ordered an attack on Cuba, it could have started a nuclear war. Both of these lessions have long been forgotten. As our policy today is one of pure aggression, based on false Intel.. Hope this will help you.- Katherine k
