Why does a 1996 Volkswagen jet ta run fine when cold but when the car gets warm it will idle but stall if you give it gas?

I'm guessing it is one of the safety sensors telling the car that it is over heating and shutting it down.. you could take it to a shop and they would run the codes on your computer and tell you if that is it or not.
