I had a similar problem with my 1998 Corolla. I just pulled the spark plug wires off (one at a time so as to not mess up the firing order) and checked out both the wire and the plug. One of the plugs was coated with a green liquid and that caused the wire to short circuit. So, one spark plug did not fire. I suspect that when I had an oil change done, the shop split from washer fluid on the spark-plug wires when topping off the washer fluid tank in the car. I clean the write and the plug with a cloth as best as I could and the problem went away for a while. Eventually, I had to replace the wire (I did all four of them) and the problem is gone for good.

Most common cause would be the plus wires. Dampness causes them to arc and the cylinder that the wire is arcing on won't fire causing a miss/sputter.
